An authentic CV will always outperform an AI generated one

The recruitment landscape has shifted considerably with AI becoming more integrated into hiring processes over the past year. I have placed thousands of candidates throughout my career, and I want to share some straight talk about what this means for your job search.

First though, a warning that might ruffle some feathers: I would strongly advise against using AI to write your CV. Good recruiters can spot AI-generated content immediately, and it rarely does you any favours. Your CV should reflect your authentic professional voice and specific experiences, not generic, algorithm-created content that sounds like everyone else's.

A top tip here is to use AI to review your authentically written CV. Ask it to rate your CV out of 10. Then take on board the feedback given and adjust your CV accordingly until you get to a score that you’re happy with. Try it and see how you get on. You must use your own judgement in the end though, sometimes AI just doesn’t get what you’re trying to relay – so only submit what YOU are happy with.

Understanding how AI is being used in recruitment can help you in your job search.

Many companies now use AI screening tools to filter applications before human eyes see them. This means including relevant keywords from the job description in your application is more important than ever, but they must be incorporated naturally and honestly.

AI chatbots are increasingly handling initial candidate communications and scheduling. Don't be surprised if your first interaction with a potential employer is automated. Respond promptly and professionally, as these interactions may be recorded and reviewed.

Despite these technological advances, the human element remains crucial. After more than 30 years in this industry, I can confidently say that no algorithm can replace the value of a genuine conversation about your career aspirations, strengths, and work style preferences.

AI should enhance productivity and automate basic tasks, allowing recruiters like me to focus on what truly matters – working closely with you to understand your career goals and match you with opportunities where you'll genuinely thrive.

I'm curious about your experiences with AI while searching for a job. Have you encountered AI screening tools or chatbots? How did you find the experience? Has AI been helpful or frustrating in your job-hunting journey?

Your insights help us better support candidates like you as the industry continues to evolve.
