You have had a great interview. You walked out feeling confident. Then... nothing. Days pass. Your inbox stays empty. Does that sound familiar?
Silence after an interview is incredibly common, and it does not mean you have been rejected. Hiring managers juggle multiple candidates, internal approvals, and shifting priorities. Sometimes the process simply takes longer than expected.
That said, you do not have to sit and wait in the dark. A well-timed follow-up after an interview can keep you front of mind without crossing any lines.
When to send a follow-up after an interview
A good rule of thumb, if the interviewer gave you a timeline, respect it. If they said "we will be in touch within a week," wait until that week has passed before reaching out.
If no timeline was mentioned, sending a brief thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview is perfectly reasonable. It shows professionalism and genuine interest. Then, if you have heard nothing after five to seven working days, a polite follow-up email is worthwhile.
What to say in your interview follow-up email
Keep it short, warm and professional.
Thank them for their time and reiterate your interest in the role. Ask if there is any update on the timeline. That's it, you don't need to oversell yourself or apologise for getting in touch.
Something along the lines of: "Thank you again for taking the time to meet with me last week. I really enjoyed learning more about the role and the team. I wanted to check in to see if there are any updates on next steps."
What not to do
Don't send multiple emails in quick succession. Do not chase via LinkedIn, email, and phone all on the same day. And whatever you do, do not take the silence personally. It is rarely about you.
What if you still hear nothing?
If another week passes with no response, one more follow-up is fine. After that, shift your energy elsewhere. Keep applying and interviewing; the right opportunity will not leave you guessing forever.
