Job Searching in 2026: How to stand out when everyone's being extra picky

Let’s talk about the job market in early 2026. It's not brilliant, but it's not terrible either. What it is, though, is different.

Employers are being more cautious and taking longer to make decisions, but they're still desperate for the right people. The problem is, they're not finding them because many strong candidates are underselling themselves.

The biggest shift we’re seeing at Aspire Jobs is that employers are moving away from the old "must have a degree in X" mentality. They're looking at what you can do. So listing responsibilities you’ve had and showing outcomes you’ve delivered can work in your favour.

  • What did you achieve?
  • What projects did you deliver?
  • If you've done recent training or certifications, get them front and centre.

AI is often being used to screen CVs before a human even looks at them.

  • Keep your job titles clear and recognisable.
  • Use industry-standard terminology.
  • Include relevant keywords naturally.
  • Make your achievements measurable with numbers or timeframes.

Accept that processes will take longer than they used to. Multiple interviews, assessments and awkward delays are now standard. It's frustrating, but when an offer does come through, it tends to be more solid.

Treat job searching like a medium-term project, not a sprint. Apply consistently, keep networking, stay visible online and keep your skills current.

The candidates who are succeeding right now are the ones who've adjusted their approach and are staying persistent. If you'd like a fresh pair of eyes on your CV or want to talk through your strategy, get in touch.
